Little Drummer Birds

As a kind of postscript to last Sunday’s sermon on joy as a verb, you’ll recall we talked about joy being embodied by singing, dancing, clapping, feasting and playing an instrument.  Several of you noticed another, a steady and insistent thump-thump-thumping going on in the background of the morning’s virtual worship.  In the book of Job, the writer declares – not once, but twice – “Ask the animals and they will teach you; the birds of the air, and they will tell you;” and again, “Who teaches us more than the animals of the earth, and makes us wiser than the birds of the air?”  And so it was those same birds of the air playing percussion in the window feeder who provided us with a kind of rhythm section in the ensemble of joy that morning.

Speaking of music, we have a gift for you.  Even though we can’t bring you a live cantata this year as has been in the past, we can and do bring you a live recording of last year’s, Joseph Martin’s “The Song Heard ’Round the World.”   Here is the link – enjoy!

Through the season of Advent we continue to collect names for the Remembrance Tree.  If you haven’t already, please send along the names of those folks you would like to be remembered during the Rite of Remembrance on Sunday January 3.  We will need the names by Dec 31 at the latest.

Remember, Christmas Eve service will be at 5:00 pm on Facebook Live, our usual platform for worship.  And next week we will send out the link for next Sunday’s special service of worship hosted by the staff of the UCC’s Southern New England Conference.  That service will be followed by another Carol Sing (last Wednesday’s was a lot of fun!) at 11:00 am.  You will have all the details by next Wednesday.

As we move toward the final Sunday of Advent, let your hearts and minds and spirits be filled with the love of the season, the love of God in your heart, and your own love for family and friends in your life.
