First Friday in February
We’re going to take some liberties with the church’s calendar this week and next. Ordinarily, the text for next Sunday (Feb 14) is the story of the transfiguration, when Peter, James and John ascended a high mountain with Jesus and had a vision of Moses and Elijah. This reading is prescribed every year for the final Sunday before Lent (which begins Feb 17), but we will use it this weekend, because I want to save Feb 14 for love!
So this weekend we’ll be talking about holiness, and next weekend about love poems, specifically the finest love poem in the Bible, the Song of Songs (or Song of Solomon). Additionally, if you have any favorite poems that speak of love, please send them to me by next Friday, I’d love to incorporate a few of your own favorites.
And speaking of Lent – can you believe it will be here in less than a fortnight!? – Karli and I are having some conversation about how best to honor Ash Wednesday. How does one impose ashes virtually? I’m not quite certain yet, but there are lots of folks asking the same question, so I’m confident I can rely on the ecclesiastical hive mind to make it happen.
