What’s the Buzz?
I wrote last week about the addition of a “Donate” button to the United Church’s web site. And thank you to all of you who took my invitation to a “test drive” to heart. Right now there are two opportunities for donations, one for your regular donation or pledge payment, and one for a dedicated gift in honor or memory of a loved one. Soon there will be a third, dedicated to the outreach ministry we offer, our Backpack and Soup Kitchen ministries among them. So if you haven’t given it a try, please feel free to, and we’d love your feedback.
Last Sunday I briefly mentioned a church service/rally in Texas that was part of what is being called the “ReAwaken America Tour.” A couple days later I heard from a UCC colleague in upstate New York who reported that the tour had scheduled a stop in Rochester, but the city decided to turn them away because of the spurious quasi-religious nature of what is in reality a political event. I did a bit of a deeper dive into it, and saw how the tour is inspired by a book called The Great Awakening vs. The Great Reset by Alexander Dugin. The book is a disturbing jeremiad and, in its own words, is “an open declaration of war against the twin diseases of liberalism and Western political modernity.” Like I said, politics disguised as religion. Jude would not have approved; nor would the apostle Paul, who writes in a similar vein in his letter to the Colossian church, as we will see this Sunday when we look at another overlooked and underpreached book of the Bible.
