The Villager Voice
Congratulations, dear friends – congratulations and blessings all around. The United Church of Chester raised $2460 for Lady Doak College as a gift for the school’s 75th anniversary celebration. It is a gift deeply appreciated. Dr. Christianna Singh, the school’s Director, also let us know that they read (and put on the big screen) a handful of the many cards and notes we sent them during their celebration, they were thrilled that so many of you took the time to offer your greetings and good wishes. We are grateful to all of you who contributed in any manner, and we are equally grateful to be able to support such a worthy institution, whose roots will always be deeply planted in Chester.
A brief postscript on last Sunday’s sermon on the life of John Calvin, which I didn’t have the time to include. After his years in Geneva, the good citizens of the city began to tire of the reformer’s insistence on certain modes of belief and behavior; it seems Calvin slowly developed a theocracy he tried to impose on them. As a result, the town’s leaders rose up against him and banished him. He entered an exile of sorts, returning to the familiar and friendlier surroundings of Basel, whence he had gone to Geneva. He lived out the remainder of his life there.
This Sunday we’re going to consider the way the church’s art, broadly defined, reflects its theology, particularly in the early creeds. You may find the links to the bulletin and service here:
