Simon’s Says

“You’re having too much fun this summer with your sermons about the more obscure books of the Bible,” one of you said to me a couple weeks ago.  And you’re absolutely right!  We hear a lot from the gospels, the Psalms and the early books of the Bible through the year, but it has been fun (at least for me, and I hope for you) to go deep with books like Malachi, Jude, Nehemiah, Titus, Zephaniah and III John.  As well, I enjoyed all the music Diane Adams brought to us last Sunday, it is always a joy to sing our way through the service.  So we’re going to take one final look at the Overlooked & Underpreached bits of the scriptures this Labor Day weekend.  And I will ask your indulgence in advance, on a weekend typically dedicated to taking it easy, when we spend some time with one of the most difficult books of the Bible, Paul’s letter to Philemon.  Though only twenty-five verses in length, Philemon challenges us to wrestle with some challenging ideas that don’t permit easy answers.  But you sit back and enjoy your leisure, in the pew or at home, and I’ll do the heavy lifting.

And speaking of leisure, remember you get an extra hour to sleep this weekend:  we return to 10:00 am worship Sunday, when we will also celebrate the Lord’s Supper.  For a reminder, communion will be served in our pre-pandemic custom of passing plates of bread and juice; but if you prefer, bottled water and individual packets of unleavened oyster crackers will be available in the narthex.

Keep an eye peeled for the Fall Uniter this week, and note the invitation to next Sunday’s picnic in the churchyard after the service.  The links to this week’s bulletin and service may be found here:
