Simon’s Says ~ from Alan

We’re right about at the midpoint of Advent, and I hope you’re enjoying the UCC’s 2019 Advent Devotional, A New Earth, our church has made available for your reading this season.

With our Advent Sermon series, “Songs of the Season,” I haven’t really been using the UCC’s devotional as a jumping-off point for my preaching as I have done in the past with both this and the Lent devotional, but somehow the readings find their ways into the conversation.  (And the astute reader will have noticed they have found their way into the bulletin on a weekly basis as well...)  Just one example is that this Sunday we are talking about the Magnificat, Mary’s song of praise following the annunciation (when Gabriel told her she was going to bear a child).  It’s just how it falls in the series of biblical songs, or canticles, of the nativity.  And Jennifer Brownell’s devotion for Sunday, whose text is taken directly from that song, is right up that  canticle’s alley (you’re going to have to read the devotion yourself to get the pun in there).

There are still two Sundays left in Advent - the season has seemed shorter this year because of Thanksgiving’s lateness.  Two Sundays left with two different kinds of songs - Mary’s this week, and the choir’s next with as they present the cantata, ‘The Song Heard ‘Round the World.’  And of course on the very last day of Advent, Christmas Eve, there will be a lot of wonderful and familiar music, both in song and in spoken word.  I hope your time with A New Earth helps you prepare for the season, for the holiday, and for the reality of God born once more into a waiting and hopeful world.

A note from Mari & Brenda:

Please remember this Sunday the 15th is the last day bring in your gifts/tags from the outreach bulletin and also to donate to Covenant to Care (they could really use more gift cards to places in Middletown that teens would enjoy shopping/eating at).

Thank you very much.
