Simon’s Says ~ from Alan
“Into the Mystic” is a lovely Van Morrison song. It is also the title of a regular podcast by United Church of Christ Minister & President John Dorhauer. Imagine my surprise when I opened this week’s podcast to learn that John’s topic is the same as our sermon this Sunday – and neither one of us is using the lectionary.
Without giving too much away, John shares an obscure story from Numbers 27 and marvels that even after all his years in church and seminary, he had never heard of the five daughters of Zelophehad before (although John mistakenly calls him Zelophedad, but that’s OK).
Come to find out, he and I took our inspiration from the same source, my colleague Manda Lynn Adams at Community UCC in Dallas – more about that Sunday. And unlike John, I have both heard of and preached about the daughters before, but this week their story is not only compelling, but it seems to be ripped from the front pages of this week’s newspapers.
Give John a listen, and come hear the story of Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah for yourself this Sunday:
