Right about now I begin hearing questions and comments about this being a busy time of year. My general answer is “Yes, and busy is good.” And it is. But a better answer is that life in the church is particularly busy from Labor Day straight on through New Year’s. And we at the United Church surely have been a busy group.
But the questions are understandable, and a glance at my calendar reveals why. Last Saturday we welcomed Val Tutson to our church for our annual storytelling performance. Val also joined us the next day for morning worship, which was followed by our Congregational Budget meeting. Tomorrow we will be collecting turkeys and Adams gift cards for our Thanksgiving community outreach project, and the next day (which is also our Hymn Sing Sunday) we will receive five new members into our covenant fellowship. That afternoon we gather with our local interfaith community for a Thanksgiving Service and celebration – state representative Christine Palm will be our speaker for the occasion.
And it isn’t even December yet! We still have our Christmas Fair, cookie-making and silly hat night, Stuff-a-Cruiser (another community outreach project), the Chester Christmas Tree & Menorah lighting, and our church choral cantata, “The Song Heard ’Round the World, to look forward to.
So yes, this is a busy time of year. And busy is good.
