What’s the Buzz?
From Jesus Christ Superstar: “What’s the buzz, tell me what’s a-happpenin…” I thought that would be the perfect header for today, as I am perched on the porch at The Hive on the corner of Maple & Main Streets. It is a beautiful morning; I’ve greeted a few passing dogs and their human counterparts, I hear the voices of children shouting back and forth, the percussive hammering of a carpenter nearby, all accompanied by the chirps and trills of the neighborhood birds.
The song goes on:
What’s the buzz, tell me what’s a happenin’
Why should you want to know?
Don’t you mind about the future?
Don’t you try to think ahead?
Save tomorrow for tomorrow
Think about today instead.
To me, this is one of the wisest of Jesus’ sayings, “So do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring worries of its own. Today’s trouble is enough for today.” (From the Sermon on the Mount.). More than “trouble,” I think this speaks to our anxieties about the future, and there is much wisdom in letting tomorrow go so we can focus on today. There is good reason why the best twelve step programs urge “One day at a time.” It’s enough.
And it feels as though with each successive Sunday we are experiencing one change at a time as we slowly and carefully resume our customary worship experience. This week you will find the return of our diminutive diacritical friend the asterisk, meaning we can stand as we sing – quietly – behind our masks – the morning’s hymns – from the hymnals – which are back in our pews. Like I said, one change at a time.
