Epistle for Epiphany
Happy Epiphany everyone! Yesterday was the 12th day of Christmas, and it’s time to leave all those drummers to their drumming as we enter the season in which Jesus is made manifest (epiphany = manifestation) to a watching, waiting and hopeful world. I was going to reflect on the ways the church approaches Epiphany this morning, but they are too numerous for this brief message. (The arrival of the magi most typically the story we remember on Epiphany.) So I’ll simply say, long before January 6 acquired a different, unfortunate connotation two years ago, this day belongs solidly to the church. (And let me wish warm Christmas greetings to our Orthodox friends, who celebrate the holiday today.)
The celebration of Phyllis Webb’s life will take place in our sanctuary Sunday afternoon January 22 at 1:00. We will commend her to God’s eternal embrace with warm remembrances, some old favorite hymns, and a service that celebrates her long life dedicated to the mission and work of the United Church of Chester. I hope you can join us that day.
And speaking of remembrance, our church’s annual Remembrance Tree ceremony, wherein we remember and honor those loved ones who have entered that same divine eternal embrace. It is a solemn ceremony, and meaningful to many. Thanks to all of you who have placed names of family and friends on the tree.
