Did you hear Vice President Kamala Harris last night? She gave a shout-out to her two Judicial inspirations, Justices Thurgood Marshall and Constance Baker Motley. A proud Chester moment.
It looks like a wonderful weekend for the Chester Fair! But several of last week’s country fairs were cut short in parts of Connecticut when what has been called a “1,000 year rainstorm” tore through the Naugatuck River Valley, the towns of Seymour, Oxford and Southbury in particular. More than 100 people were displaced and two lost their lives. While some of our sister churches in the region were affected, the pastor of the Seymour Congregational Church, which only suffered mild flood damage, observed it was the anniversary of the disastrous Flood of 1955 that did much more serious damage to the church. Fortunately they were prepared this time around. And the Oxford Congregational Church opened its doors for use as a shelter for some of the displaced families. Other area churches collected food and clothing items for the storm’s victims. It is testimony to our denomination’s commitment to community engagement that motivates such reflexive outreach and hospitality.
Do note this is the last Sunday we worship at 9:00 am. We return to our 10:00 services next Sunday, September 1. And in two weeks we celebrate Rally Day and our annual church picnic. Bring a dish to share and be sure to invite a friend or neighbor to join us that day!
