Hurricane Helene made landfall last night as a Category 4 storm, and although it degraded rather quickly to a Category 1, it continues to cause death and damage along its path, and it still rages in the southern Atlantic states. Millions are without power, and homes are flooded beyond repair. And thanks to you, response teams are already primed to go into devastated areas and begin relief work. The United Church of Christ Disaster Response Team is poised to assist residents and families who have lost everything. Your generous contributions to our church, a portion of which are sent along to the denomination, help fund this vital, life-saving ministry. When Stewardship season rolls around this fall, remember all the good work you help to support in time of dire need like this.
When I spoke about Mark Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn last Sunday, there was one bit I neglected to include. While attempting to interpret the motive and moral of the tale, I did so with a bit of fear and trembling prompted by the author’s own epigram at the outset:
“Persons attempting to find a motive in this narrative will be prosecuted; persons attempting to find a moral in it will be banished; persons attempting to find a plot in it will be shot.”
Fortunately I emerged unscathed, and I appreciate the many comments I received from you at the end of the service.
