I hope you are enjoying the daily reflections in this year’s UCC Lent Devotional. I find something edifying in it on a regular basis. I don’t necessarily agree with every position a writer takes, but every one provides food for thought, and prayer, and that’s good enough for me. Tomorrow’s piece by Molly Baskette (yes, I do read ahead) is particularly apt, given our times. She writes about the peace that passes all understanding, the kind of peace Jesus provides abundantly in the face of anxiety, injustice, and our own insecurity. But our idea of finding peace, and God’s idea of providing peace, are often two different things, and sometimes that can create a certain dissonance within us. Give Molly’s piece a read tomorrow, you’ll be glad you did.
Speaking of tomorrow: there are two events I’d like to lift up. In the morning, beginning at 9:00, local residents and community leaders will hold a peaceful vigil in front of Deep River’s Town Hall, a quiet witness to democracy, nonviolence and building positive community. You’ll find me there. You’ll also find me at church later in the day at 7:30 for a concert performance of operatic excerpts. The United Church’s own Hilarie Clark Moore, musician, composer and conductor, is presenting pieces from two of her major compositions, “The Fisher Girl” and “Jeannie.” It will be a terrific evening of music, admission is simply a free-will offering, and a reception will follow. I do hope you can be here, you’ll be glad you attended.
Finally, thank you all for the kind birthday wishes. It was a music- and joy-filled day for me, and reminded me why I am so grateful for every one of you, and those of our wider community. You are a blessing.
