This Sunday is a special one in the life of the church. We will remember Katie Wilcox, Chester resident, church member and founder of Lady Doak College in Madurai. Katie’s legacy continues to shape the lives of the young women in India and beyond. The Rev. Eileen Sypher will offer a reflection on Katie’s life and work, and we will have an opportunity to lend our support, after a fashion, as we will receive a special offering for our ongoing commitment to the college.
Sunday is also our annual Congregational Meeting. Immediately following worship, we will receive the annual reports of our boards and committees and vote on the nominating slate for the 2025-2026 church year. I hope you’ve had the opportunity to read the report, distributed last week; it is a rich tapestry that creates a vision of the arc of our shared ministry over the past year.
Speaking of Annual Meetings, on Monday evening the Middlesex Association of the Southern New England Conference will gather for worship and business as we assess the work we do together as area congregations of the United Church of Christ. UCC delegates Ed Sypher and Torrey O’Connor will join me at the Haddam-Higganum church for the occasion. Admittedly, I get to see my colleagues at least once a month at committee meetings and clergy fellowship, but it is always good to be the church together with clergy and members across the association.
Finally, speaking of colleagues, Rev. Tim Haut of the Deep River Church will join me on stage at East Lyme High School Saturday night for the Southeast Connecticut Community Orchestra’s final performance of the season. Tim will narrate Aaron Copland’s A Lincoln Portrait, a powerful piece of music whose sentiments have much to say about the times in which we find ourselves today.
