Perhaps it was the cooler temperatures this week that caused me to look back wistfully at the summer so far – I’m not one who pines for an early autumn, and we still have a month of summer to go, but here at the United Church it has been a delightful season so far.
The summer’s music at church has been a real delight. While the choir enjoys a well-earned respite, individual singers have the chance to rise to the occasion and offer their gifts in solo, duo, trio and larger ensembles. I so appreciate hearing your individual talents that you bring to worship – everyone has their own musical personality, and it is during summer when they are able to shine brightly. We still have a few weeks to go before the choir returns, I recommend you come give a listen.
As well, I’ve had a good time with our summer sermon series, it has given me the opportunity to focus directly on issues and topics you have asked me about. I breakfasted with a neighbor this morning who was intrigued with the idea that my sermons in these languorous days are shaped by the congregation. Honestly, I like to think most of them are, but having your handwritten suggestions and requests right in front of me is not just very helpful, but keeps me on task! Thank you for your thoughtful wonderings.
And I must not be the only one who is enjoying summertime worship because we have enjoyed a healthy attendance over the past couple months. I recognize that our 9:00 worship time works both ways: some of us relish the “extra” time it gives us during the day because we are usually out by 10:00; but I also recognize that, for some, getting ready for church at an earlier hour is a challenge. So, kudos to you in the pews and the same for you who worship from home, perhaps sitting on your patio with that second cup of coffee. We’re the same congregation no matter where Sunday morning finds us.
