Simon’s Says
Happy Hallowe’en friends! And may tomorrow’s All Saints Day be a blessing for you.
One crisp autumn Sunday morning early in my ministry (this being Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, there was likely already snow on the ground), there was a knock at my front door. I was getting ready for church, stopped what I was doing and opened it to find one of my Deacons standing there with a slightly bewildered look on his face. “What are you still doing here?” he asked. I looked at him quizzically, not quite understanding the question. “I’m still getting ready, why, is there something wrong?” Was a parishioner having an emergency? Was something wrong at church? Was he in some sort of crisis? “Church begins in ten minutes,” he replied, “and here you are still at home, and nobody’s there! What’s going on?” The situation came into focus when I glanced at my watch.
Friends, don’t be that Deacon. Don’t come to church an hour early. Remember to set your clocks back an hour tomorrow night so you can avoid driving to Old Lyme to knock at my front door wondering where I am.
And if you are looking for something to do with the rest of your Sunday, you are welcome to join me at the Old Lyme Middle School auditorium where the Southeastern Connecticut Community Orchestra will be performing the music of Rossini, Delibes, Chabrier, Elgar and Borodin, beginning at 3:00. Eastern Standard Time, of course.
