One cannot be blamed for wondering if Mother Nature (Winter edition) has something against Sunday morning worship. Last Sunday saw icy conditions and temperatures in the single digits accompanied by drifty winds. We had 20 hearty souls in church that morning, with the choir matching the pew-sitters in number. Two weeks ago a winter storm kept us all home for church, the first wholly-remote worship since the pandemic. And a month before that wintery weather put a damper on a special Christmas service we had planned for children and families, although a half dozen young people came undeterred by the cold. Fingers crossed, the weather for this Sunday looks good enough for a tractor parade.
This is the last Sunday before Lent begins. We will spend the morning remembering loved ones passed, with a service themed “Wish You Were Here,” a project by our Deacons to encourage us to share stories of folks who were and remain important influences in our lives. Many of you have submitted names, photos and remembrances for the morning, and there is still time to do so if you have not. Click here if you would like to enter a story online.
Ash Wednesday is next week and marks the beginning of Lent. We will hold worship that day (February 18) at 4:00, and it will include the imposition of ashes for those who desire it. Also for Lent, we are distributing the UCC’s Lent Devotional, “Outgrow,” for your daily reading; copies are available in the narthex. There is one for each church family, free for the taking courtesy of our Deacons, and as in the past I will be using the devotions as a jumping-off point for my sermons during the season. I look forward to sharing it with you.
