In the past month a couple of you – and thankfully, only a couple – told me you received an email from me asking for gift cards. Experience has taught us to delete them immediately, and that I will never send out mass requests for money in any form. I’m pretty certain this is but the remnant of an old data leak, and I hope it disappears completely. Oddly enough, after eight and a half years as your minister, I have only recently begun to receive spam emails of my own in my church account. Why it has taken so long heaven only knows. Have the spammers only recently discovered my email address? Is the address length (w.alan.froggatt@uccchester.org) too cumbersome for a bot or malefactor? Regardless, I send those to the same place you are sending those bothersome false requests for gift cards, straight into the digital dust bin.
This is the first Sunday in Lent, and as in Lents past I will borrow my sermon ideas from our UCC Lenten Devotional, whether just the Bible readings or the ideas the writers offer, it will depend on the week. This week I was struck by a common theme presented by Molly Baskette in Thursday’s piece, Outgrowing Christ(ianity) and Phiwa Langeni’s Off Trail, On Purpose in Saturday’s (tomorrow’s) devotion. If you get the chance, take a look at them before Sunday, and if you haven’t picked up your copy of the devotional, titled Outgrow, please take one for yourself next time you’re in church – you can also stop by the office during the week if that is more convenient. I believe you’ll be glad you did.
