Simon’s Says

Dear Church, we have wonderful news:  our Music Director Search Committee has called Corbin Beisner to the position, and he has accepted.  He will begin his ministry with us on October 1.  Both candidates brought a good degree of musicality and expertise to the table, and God graced us with a difficult choice.  While a variety of factors led to the choice of Corbin, the congregation’s input after hearing both was an important factor in the decision, and we are grateful to you.  We look forward to welcoming him in worship Sunday October 4.  Our United Church owes a good deal of thanks to those who steered the search:  Jennifer Gill, Pat Holloway, Hilarie Clark Moore and the Rev. Eileen Sypher.  I am deeply grateful.

Though I’m loathe to surrender summer, meteorological autumn is upon us and brings with it a change of schedule:  we return to 10:00 am worship this Sunday.  It is a communion Sunday, and we welcome our former Music Director Sue Saltus, returning for the day to lead our musical worship.

This Sunday after church is our quarterly Sermon Talk-Back.  I’m preaching on a Labor Day theme this week, and the scripture lessons are Ecclesiastes 3.9-15 and I Corinthians 3.5-15.  The former has long been a favorite of mine, following as it does the much more familiar passage that precedes it, “There is a time and purpose for every matter under heaven…”  Join us as we take a deeper look at both and see what they may be saying to us.

Finally, a week from Sunday is our annual Rally Day and Picnic.  Bring a dish to share, come for worship and stay for the followship that follows, it is always a good time to break bread together.
