Chapters into Verse is a book I have cherished for many years. The subtitle is, “A selection of poetry in English inspired by the Bible from Genesis through Revelation.” Arranged by books of the Bible, the anthology contains poetry by an exhaustive list of writers (up until its 2000 publication date): W.H. Auden, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, ee cummings, Emily Dickinson, T.S. Eliot, Robert Frost, Allen Ginsberg, A.E. Houseman, James Joyce… well, you get the picture. Some of the poetry addresses a specific biblical story, other considers more general biblical ideas. It is a rich volume that has provided me with a good deal of inspiration, and new ways of understanding God. We will hear a handful of poems from it this Sunday, as we celebrate Mother’s Day by sharing poems that speak to us. Some of you have already sent me a sampling of your favorite poetry for Sunday – if you haven’t yet, please do so today or tomorrow, and I’ll include it in worship. And if this turns out to be too much of a good thing, then we’ll do it again very soon.

Because of the way we have structured our weekly worship, we’ve only been singing one hymn each week, and I know some of you are missing many of the old chestnuts. I’m pleased to write that plans are underway for a “virtual hymn sing” in a couple weeks. Next week we will have all the details, and will send them via both email and snail mail. So polish up those vocal cords and get ready to sing ~
And remember, in spite of the fact that the church remains “closed” for in-person encounter, I and our staff are here for you. We are but a phone call (we check messages daily), a text or an email away, and I am holding you all in prayer as we continue to be the church separately together.
