A Bright New Tune
“Can music salve your mortal soul?” Don McLean sang in the venerable 1971 hit, “American Pie” (OK, so I added an “L” to his lyric). It sure felt like it at Wednesday afternoon’s hymn sing. It felt like a day to sing out and be bathed in the balm of song as our nation turned the page to a new chapter in our history. We had quite the varied audience as well, and it was nice to share the moment with you, and with friends and family far-flung. Nicely done, Karli, as always, and thank you.
At the risk of playing a one-note samba, last week’s topic of Hope will get another treatment this Sunday. The way I look at it, there’s no such thing as too much hope, and in a time of pandemic, quarantine, lost jobs and local businesses hanging on by a thread, hope is as much a balm as music. We’re going to be looking at Paul’s treatment of the idea in the book of Romans. As has become our practice, we will be hearing from a couple poets as well as the apostle. I hope you’ll be able to join us.
One of the things that makes me hopeful is the availability of a vaccine against COVID 19. As many of you know, I serve on the Social Services, Spirituality and Emotional Wellness subcommittee of Chester’s Long-Term Recovery Task Force. One of our immediate tasks is to contact as many of our community’s 75+ year olds to assist in scheduling a vaccination appointment. If you have not been contacted yet, please call Mari Lynd at the church office (we are a designated contact for scheduling), 860.526.2697. There are several available portals through which to make an appointment, and it is our aim to make this process as smooth as possible.
It is, indeed, a day for a bright new tune.
