When I was young, the daily newspaper had a small box on the bottom of the front page giving readers the merchandisers’ holiday countdown; if it were today’s paper it would read, “Five Shopping Days Until Christmas.” Don’t say you haven’t been warned.
Speaking of news, we do have a lot to share for the coming week. This Sunday is our choir’s annual Christmas Cantata, “Appalachian Winter.” Under Karli Gilbertson’s direction, our singers will be accompanied by a small instrumental ensemble. It is a lovely and meaningful way to begin Christmas week, and one our congregation eagerly anticipates and appreciates. As well, the morning will feature not one, not two, but three baptisms, so the air will be filled with the spirit of birth and celebration. We look forward to seeing you with us.
Tuesday’s Christmas Eve service will take place at 5:00 pm. It will be a service of music, lessons and carols, as well as our traditional candle lighting to conclude. We are still looking for readers, so if you’d like to do a reading that night, please let Alan know by Monday.
And if you haven’t had your fill of Christmas music yet, the following Sunday, December 29 will feature a Carol sing, where you get to choose what hymns and carols we sing that day. We did this last year and it was a well-received experience.
Finally, the Remembrance Tree is standing in the narthex. If you would like to leave the name or names of a family member or friend you would like remembered in worship Sunday January 5, please do so in the next week or so, it is a wonderful way of celebrating lives richly lived and passed.
