Simon’s Says
Between 110 and 120 souls assembled at the United Church Wednesday evening for prayer, meditation, song, and most of all to witness to our commitment to justice, compassion and solidarity with those whose lives are being upended by unjust and lawless actions against our immigrant sisters and brothers. Our wider interfaith community gathered to stand together shoulder to shoulder in the recognition that the love and mercy of God sustain us especially in these fraught days. Lutheran and Congregational, Baptist and Episcopal, Jewish and Christian, folks from Chester and Deep River, Essex and Westbrook, Ivoryton and Centerbrook, we sang and prayed and worshiped as one. I am so grateful for all of you who showed up for our neighbors, in particular those who helped with logistics, our crack parking squad and the Deacons who helped it all run smoothly. The fact that so many people came out on a chilly night demonstrated our community’s need to be strong together. Thank you to all who participated in any way, you helped make it a memorable evening.
We’re going to have some fun this Sunday morning. The attached bulletin includes a puzzle for you to work out, centered on some of the things we say and believe about Jesus. As the season of Epiphany is passing quickly, I thought we’d spend some time with him this weekend; next week is the last Sunday before Lent begins, if you can believe that! And thinking of next Sunday, don’t forget to submit a memory or two of loved ones gone for our Remembrance Sunday (Feb. 15), “Wish You Were Here.” A bulletin board in the Fellowship Hall already features some of your memories, we hope to see more by next week, and we will celebrate them during worship that morning.
