Holy Week Notes
Sunday after church a few of you commented on the poem I read, The Donkey, by English poet G.K. Chesterton. Since so much of the meaning was only revealed at the end, you wished I had read it twice. And I confess, it was so brief, it could easily have stood a second reading. So here it is for those who asked (and those who didn’t!):
When fishes flew and forests walked,
And figs grew upon thorn,
Some moment when the moon was blood,
Then surely I was born.
With monstrous head and sickening cry,
And ears like errant wings,
The devil’s walking parody
Of all four-footed things.
The tattered outlaw of the earth,
Of ancient, crooked will;
Starve, scourge, deride me: I am dumb,
I keep my secret still.
Fools! For I also had my hour;
One far fierce hour and sweet:
There was a shout about my ears,
And palms before my feet.
In the midst of these holy days in both Christian and Jewish traditions, Chester offers a bit of fun for the young among us: The Chester Hose Company’s annual Easter Egg hunt, held tomorrow (Saturday) at Noon. And in the spirit of giving back to the community, the CHC will also be collecting food items for the Shoreline Soup Kitchen and Pantry two weeks from tomorrow, Saturday April 18, between 9:00 and 1:00, so stop by and help the Hose Company make a difference.
We are watching the weather closely for Sunday’s Sunrise Service at Deep River’s Fountain Hill Cemetery at 6:15 am. Right now it looks like it could break either way; a decision will be made by Saturday afternoon, and if we need to cancel on account of rain, we will post it on our church Facebook page by 6:00 pm Saturday. Easter Day worship at the United Church will be at the usual 10:00 hour rain or shine!
