My regular column in the Uniter newsletter takes its title – Overlooking Jennings Pond – from my office vista, which offers a delightful view of the pond behind our church building. These days however, it might be better titled, Looking for Jennings Pond, as my view is wonderfully obscured by a riot of dogwood blossoms on the trees outside my window. They are among the many colors of early spring which are appearing all around the lower valley these days. Light greens of the early leafing, light and dark pinks and purples of tree blossoms and ground cover, it makes for a rainbow of pastels. When Debbie and I left for vacation in mid-April, at a time when the bright yellow of daffodils and forsythia lit up the region, we lamented that by the time we returned they would all be faded. Not so – Mother Nature kindly paused Spring while we were away, and on our return, they were as vibrant as the day we left. Following an unusually cold and snowy winter, Creation redeemed our (somewhat) patient wait for these days.
It is meeting season for the church, local and regional. I hope you can be with us Sunday for the United Church’s Annual Congregational Meeting, when we will receive committee and personnel reports from the year just past, and vote on a slate of committee members and officers for the year to come. And on Monday, our Middlesex Association of the Southern New England Conference of the UCC meets in Killingworth for its own annual meeting. I will be joined by church delegates Ed Sypher and Torrey O’Connor.
On an extracurricular note, I invite you to the Spring Concert of the Southeast Connecticut Community Orchestra Sunday afternoon at 3:00 at the East Lyme High School. It will feature a program of American music, including pieces by George Gershwin, Duke Ellington, John Williams, Aaron Copland and more.
