Simon’s Says

Our United Church’s Annual Congregational Meeting will be held immediately following worship this Sunday May 15, and I’d like to use this space to offer my personal thanks to all of you who have served, and continue to serve our church so faithfully, particularly through the most unusual past two years.

First, thanks to all who have served as officers, board and committee members through the pandemic.  To pedestrian eyes, it may appear to have been a cushy sinecure.  With the church “shut down” for more than a year, how hard can it be to serve on a committee that either doesn’t meet, or meets from the comfort of home?  But for everyone who had never heard the word “Zoom” prior to 2020, the learning curve was both steep and sudden.  As well, administering the church’s general operations is much easier when we see each other on a weekly basis; keeping track of each other’s well-being, and maintaining a functioning ministry in absentia is another prospect entirely.

Thanks also to those who are taking on new responsibilities.  This may be your first time in a United Church position.  Or you may be returning to a familiar role.  Perhaps you are simply switching hats.  Whatever the case, your church is grateful for your willingness to try something new, or different.

Finally, a good deal of gratitude for those who are stepping away from “official” church responsibilities.  Everyone deserves a break after their years of service, and the last thing we want is to burn anyone out in the service of Jesus Christ.  Seems rather a contradiction to spiritual health, doesn’t it?  So much gratitude and thanksgiving all around on the occasion of Sunday’s meeting.

To close, a few pastoral and administrative updates.  Remember the celebration of Harold Jones’ life will take place this Sunday afternoon at 2:00 in our sanctuary; the Jones family kindly asks we all be masked for the occasion.  Also our dear brother and friend Charlie Hnilicka passed away last weekend; his life will be celebrated at a graveside service at the East Haddam cemetery (proximate to the Congregational Church) this Thursday at 11:00 am.  And last night the Board of Trustees voted to hire two new staff members to replace our outgoing Parish Administrator, Mari Lynd, and Bookkeeper Jody Abel.  Once all the papers are signed we will introduce the new staff members to the congregation.
