The Villager Voice
On June 1, the United Church of Christ visited the White House.  Our General Minister and President John Dorhauer was among the faith leaders invited to meet with the staff of both the President and Vice-President to have a roundtable discussion about reproductive rights in the face of the anticipated overturning of Roe v. Wade.  In addition to our UCC, those present at the meeting included representatives from the Evangelical Church of America, the United Methodist Church, Presbyterian Church USA, the Fellowship of Affirming Ministries, Reconstructing Judaism, the Rabbinical Assembly, Yeshivat Chovevei Torah and the Central Conference of American Rabbis.  Rev. Dorhauer noted, “One of the more powerful and poignant moments came when the Jewish leaders said that overturning Roe v. Wade would prohibit them from being in compliance with Jewish law; that in fact there were times when the moral imperative would call for the abortion.  This in effect means they would be prohibited from practicing their faith if the court acts to overturn its previous decision.”  It is a powerful witness that so many different religious expressions had a place at the White House table to advocate for reproductive rights.  (And by the way, Quinn Caldwell had a provocative piece on the topic for Wednesday’s Daily Devotional; if you’d like to read it – it’s called “Mary Said…”  - you may find it here: https://www.ucc.org/daily-devotional/mary-said/)

As we bade farewell and Godspeed last week to Mari Lynd, our outgoing Parish Administrator, this Sunday we welcome her successor, Sally Marston, during morning worship.  (And no, I’m not preaching on all the Sallys in the Bible this week.)  Come say hello to the new face of the UCC!  And on a side note, I am going to be working remotely all of next week.  You can still reach me by phone or text, and Sally will be available next week as well.
