What’s the Buzz?
Another unfortunate incident occurred in Deep River earlier this week, in which an individual in his 40s struck a young bi-racial 11 year old. While investigators are still piecing together the story’s particulars, it is a painful experience for a community to process, especially such a small, tight-knit community as our Tri-Town area. This comes on the heels of last month’s sign defacement, also in Deep River, which also expressed racist tropes. While it is tempting to think things like this are more likely to happen in other communities, they can and do happen here as well.
But I also think it’s true that our nerves are very close to the surface in these days. Between the January 6 hearings and recent Supreme Court rulings on the national level, and the coming fall elections on the local, the cultural mood is tender and tenuous at the same time. As your minister, the temptation is powerful to editorialize instead of preach (yes, there is a difference) on so many of these Sunday mornings, but the Bible keeps me grounded and helps me put this sometimes crazy world into a much wider context. I pray the same for all of us, that we look first through the eyes of our faith, and then use this as a filter through which to comprehend the news of the day.
And if you desire a way to express our solidarity as a community, I remind you of the weekly Friday afternoon (5:00) vigil in front of Deep River’s Town Hall. You will surely see some familiar faces there!
Here are the bulletin and link to Sunday’s service, which begins at 9:00!
