Simon’s Says

Speaking of signs…

Alans sign

This will look familiar to many of you.  Our church bought a dozen or so and made them available to the congregation, and some of you brought them home to display in your yard.  Mine has greeted the good folks of Library Lane for a couple years now, and has weathered the rain, snow, wind and hail.  For the most part anyway.

While my street is a dead end, it does get a lot of pedestrian traffic:  runners, walkers - lots of dog walkers - bikers, and hikers.  At the end of the street is the trailhead for the Champlain North and South hiking trails, and some will park at the foot of our street in the library lot and walk the length of the street to the trail.  So this friendly sign greets a good number of people on a daily basis.

Apparently though, it seems not everyone appreciates it.  On multiple occasions it’s been bent over or pulled out of the ground.  Yes, the wind can play havoc with things like this, but the wind doesn’t pick it up and put it back in the ground after turning it 90 degrees.  My better angels tell me someone or ones enjoy pulling good natured prank, and I dutifully stop at the top of my driveway and put it right before driving along.  Well, about a week ago the poor thing gave out - one of its legs broke off completely, and I made a mental note to stop by the hardware store to pick up another.  But before I could, some kind soul left a brand new stand next to my mailbox, far sturdier than the original.  And the thought struck me:  someone read the first line and decided it applied to them.  It made my week.
