The Villager Voice

I confess, with all that has been in the news this week, I feel slightly derelict in bringing one more sermon on sabbaticals and study leaves this Sunday.  Mug shots, a mysterious plane crash, lingering damage and grief following Maui’s tragic wildfire, and a debate marking the beginning of what an old friend of mine called the “long silly season” surely cry out for people of faith to take the measure, if not the temperature, of the present moment.  But it is Chester Fair Weekend, summer seems to be sprinting toward a premature conclusion and our students and teachers are soaking in the waning moments of their end-of-vacation countdown, so to paraphrase Jesus’ words in the Sermon on the Mount, let the day’s own trouble be sufficient to itself.

In a bit of blessedly apolitical church news, the church parking lot is finished – the resurfacing was completed last Sunday.  A lot that is used by a good number of Chesterites besides our congregation, for things like library events (including this weekend’s book sale!) and Sunday market and First Friday goers, we’re grateful to our Trustees for maintaining and preserving for the future such a well-used public space.  Also, mark your calendar for this year’s Storytelling event, our (mostly) annual Tellabration.  This year’s will be held Sunday afternoon November 5 beginning at 4:00.  The theme will be Family Stories and Other Folk Songs and will feature Ann Shapiro and our own Margie Warner.  Check out our upcoming Uniter for more details.

Here are the links to this week’s bulletin and service.  And remember, this is the last weekend for 9:00 worship, we return to the 10:00 hour next week.  See you at the Fair!
