Simon’s Says

I want to express my thanks to our Deacons for the wonderful pot luck picnic we enjoyed two weeks ago.  There was a wonderful variety of dishes – this congregation likes to cook as much as it does eat – and there was great fellowship around the tables.  And although we could not keep our eyes from glancing skyward as the clouds slowly gathered, we were all done and cleaned up by the time the skies opened up.  (They did so just as I was beginning a graveside service in Deep River – umbrellas in abundance kept us dry, mostly.)  We do miss our days of picnics at Cedar Lake, but this was the second year we celebrated on the church grounds, and one of the many things I appreciate about it is that folks driving by can see us gathered outdoors enjoying our shared fellowship.

As a postscript to last Sunday’s sermon on loneliness (if you missed it, both service and sermon are available on our web site), Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy will be speaking at Asylum Hill UCC in Hartford about the topic, and about his proposed legislation targeting the debilitating health effects of loneliness.  The forum will take place next Friday September 29 beginning at 6pm.  If you’d like more information, you may find it here:

A friend of mine tapped me on the shoulder yesterday while I was out and about and said, “I saw your sermon title on the church sign.  [It reads, ‘God Believes in You.’]  I needed to know that today.”  Always nice to know what the community thinks of our outdoor posts.  If you need to know that too, we’ll see you Sunday.
