Simon’s Says ~ from Alan

At a Christmas party the other evening – a delightful gathering of friends – we engaged in a Yankee Swap.  One of the gifts came with a riddle:  what well-known composer wrote a Christmas carol in 5/4 time?

Those of you who are fans of jazz will readily guess the answer:  Dave Brubeck, whose signature composition, “Take Five,” is also in 5/4 time (translation:  five beats to a measure, the quarter note gets one beat).  Brubeck’s carol is “God’s Love Made Visible.”  More accurately, Brubeck wrote the music; his wife Iola penned the verses.  If you’d like to hear it for yourself, you may find it here:  It isn’t in our hymnal, but it is in the one we used in my previous church, Worship & Rejoice, and it came to be a congregational favorite.

Besides the unusual, yet catchy rhythm, I really like what the lyrics express:

God’s love made visible!  Incomprehensible!  He is invincible! His love shall reign!

From love so bountiful, blessings uncountable make death surmountable!  His love shall reign!

Joyfully pray for peace and good will!  All of our yearning he will fulfil.

Live in a loving way! Praise him for every day!  Open your hearts and pray! His love shall reign!

God gave his Son to us to dwell as one of us, his blessing unto us!  His love shall reign!

To him all honor bring, heaven and earth will sing, praising our Lord and King!  His love shall reign!

Open all doors this day of his birth, all of good will inherit the earth.

His star will always be guiding humanity throughout eternity!  His love shall reign!

It is still only Advent, but this is one Christmas hymn that I wouldn’t mind hearing more frequently.
